I read a lot of Angela Davis, as well as The Color of Law, Hella Town, and other books about systemic racism while living in Oakland, CA. I also was working in the heart of the tech sector, codifying the systemic practices I was awakening to around me. I needed a way to show how pervasive racial bias is in the APIs I was writing stories about, and I thought the colors and texture of The Problem We All Live With by Normal Rockwell captured the veneer that was being pulled back by what I was reading and learning. I am still matching my photography with this filter, but I am learning, adjusting, and keeping an eye out for what matters when it comes to system racism being codified into Internet technology today.
